A Journey to Your Perfect Beach House: Exploring Different Coastal Design Styles:

It may not seem varied, but  Coastal design is as diverse as the shores that inspire it. From the laid-back vibe of the Surfer style (think West Coast) to the sophisticated charm of Charleston, each coastal aesthetic offers a unique way to bring the ocean’s tranquility into your home. Over the next week, I'll explore various coastal design styles, ending with my personal favorite: the New England Cottage Eclectic. Whether you’re designing a summer retreat or simply want to infuse your home with coastal charm, I hope these tips will guide you to the perfect style for your space.

Day 1-2: Surfer Neutral and Chill

Lets start the coastal design journey with the easy-going, relaxed vibe of what I would call Surfer style. Think retro 60-70's surf shack. Our towns up the mid section of New Jersey are this! Our kids are on beach cruisers barefoot as soon as they can ride and the beach is often the first place they are given permission as 'big kids' to ride to. Our lawns are littered with bikes when they meet up. We have small surf shop in town where everyone buys their board shorts, bikinis and boards. The kids have surf board racks on their bikes and if any of them actually lock their bike up at the beach its a miracle. They wear their hair a little long and are 'cool' when they are toddlers.

The beach literally comes into our homes! They might wear flip flop but usually there are no shoes. Those kids, big and small aren't great at leaving the sand on the beach. Think neutral tones with pops of ocean blues and greens, natural materials like sisal, rattan and bamboo, and comfortable, casual furniture. A good surfer Baja blankets in baskets next to the couch, a low pile dhurrie or sisal rug so the sand wont hide and you're almost there.

This style is perfect for a beach house where the primary goal is to relax and unwind. Think walking off the beach after a full day of sun and salty water with sand still in between your toes. Look for light, breezy textiles like linen and cotton to keep the space airy and fresh. Add coastal photography or surfboards for a personal touch that reflects your love for the ocean.

Quick Wins if this is the style you or your teen/young adults are looking for

  1. Add Natural Textures: Incorporate rattan or bamboo furniture like a small side table or chair to instantly bring in that laid-back, beachy vibe.

  2. Pop of Ocean Blue: Swap out throw pillows or a throw blanket for ones in ocean blues and greens to add a coastal color splash. (or my Oyster/Clam series art prints!)

  3. Coastal Photography: Hang a large framed beach or surf photo on the wall to create an instant focal point that captures the Salty Surfer essence.
